Volunteer Program
American General Life Companies (American General) has a longstanding tradition of community service among our employees. To support this core value, each employee is eligible to take four hours of paid time off per month to volunteer in the community. Whether it is building a home for a less advantaged family, mentoring a child or walking to raise money for an important cause, American General employees readily give of their time to help others. Additionally, employees provide their professional expertise to charitable organizations by consulting on special projects and serving on boards.

Throughout the year, the company organizes a series of formal volunteer projects for employees through its Step-Up volunteer program. Employees are also able to receive referrals on volunteer opportunities that match their personal interests, as well as request customized volunteer projects to meet the needs of a specific employee group or department.

Volunteer Highlights

Building Ready to lend a hand – and a hammer – American General employees build housing for low income families through Habitat for Humanity in Illinois, Wisconsin and Texas. Concerned with the housing conditions of the elderly, employees also help Rebuilding Together Houston repair homes to help those with physical and financial limitations.

Donating From turkeys to toys, employees help make the holidays brighter for less advantaged children and families through donation drives in conjunction with a variety of organizations, such as the United Way of Monmouth County in New Jersey and the Jack Lowe Elementary School in Dallas.

Serving Whether canning peanut butter to support the Houston Food Bank or securing fresh produce for the Central Illinois Food Bank's “Plant a Row for the Hungry” program, American General employees are dedicated to eradicating hunger.

Walking Each year, hundreds of employees lace up their sneakers and take part in fundraising events across the country such as the AIDS Walk, March of Dimes Walk for Babies and the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, to name a few.

Community Spirit Awards

In recognition of outstanding volunteer efforts, American General Life Companies annually honors a distinguished group of employees through its Community Spirit Awards. Award recipients receive a $5,000 grant to designate to the charity of their choice.
